Rihanna Speaks on “Man Down” Video Criticism

Rihanna has released another single from her newest album Loud. “Man Down” reveals her beautiful Barbadian accent most of us forgot about.

When the song was released there was a lot of criticism due to opening scene when Rihanna shots a man in the head. Though they only seemed to notice this, later on in the video you see the man who she shot had sexually assaulted her.

“Rape is, unfortunately, happening all over the world and in our own homes and we continue to cover it up and pretend it doesn’t happen,” says Rihanna. “Boys and girls feel compelled to be embarrassed about it, and they hide it from everyone, including their teachers, their parents and their friends. That only continues to empower the abusers.”

She always says she does not condone violence.

Later on in a series of tweets, she writes, “I’m a 23 year old rockstar with NO KIDS! What’s up with everybody wantin me to be a parent? I’m just a girl, I can only be your/our voice! Cuz we all know how difficult/embarrassing it is to communicate touchy subject matters to anyone especially our parents! And this is why! Cuz we turn the other cheek! U can’t hide your kids from society, or they’ll never learn how to adapt! This is the REAL WORLD!,”

As of right now, BET is the only television station allowing the video to be aired.

For-profit Colleges Risk Cuts in Student Aid

The Obama administration has recently passed a new controversial rule in which federal aid will be cut from for-profit colleges if students in certain programs graduate with too much debt and degrees that will not prepare them for future employment.

Under this rule, universities will be asked to show that short-term career programs such as culinary arts, automotive technology or medical support actually do prepare their graduates for gainful employment.

Obama has stated that if colleges fail to meet these requirements three times in four years, they will begin to lose access to billions of dollars in aid. The first year that colleges will risk this loss will be 2015.

This regulation includes mostly for-profit colleges, but also affects public and private community colleges and non-profit career programs. According to USA Today, Education Secretary Arne Duncan said, “Millions of low-income students are borrowing heavily to attend for-profit (colleges).” These institutions receive about 80% of their revenue from taxpayer-financed federal student aid. Obama’s plan is to minimize this.
