What the Plank is Going On?

Dwight Howard Planking

Everyone is doing it! The new laying down game called planking has become the new internet craze. People are lying down in an awkward position with their arms to their sides in various places just to take pictures and put them on the internet. All the celebrities are doing this game. Although this game brings on lots of laughs, there is negative connotations behind planking. For one, there are people who are being seriously injured from this game, even resulting into death. A 20 year old boy, fell off of a balcony while planking drunk earlier this year.

For two, planking has roots that date back to American slavery. The slaves were placed on boats that transported them from Africa to America and the slaves were made to lie in a planking position and it was called planking the slaves. So although everyone is doing it and it seems likes the fun thing to do, is it worth killing yourself or mocking a historical period so dark?

Casey Anthony Verdict

After 3 years of waiting and wondering if a young mother, Casey Anthony, would be charged with the killing and murder of her then 3 year old daughter, Caylee Anthony, everything has finally come to a surprising conclusion. Casey Anthony was found not guilty in the murder of her daughter. When the verdict was read, there was a gasping sound that could be heard outside of the courtroom and around the world. Many were disappointed in the verdict; many even cried. It just seemed to be unjust that Anthony would be let go, free of just punishment when all the evidence pointed to her doing the crime. Any mother would agree, that no mother in their right mind would wait 30 days to report that their child has gone missing. Anthony also lied on numerous occasions in court, mixing up her stories and placing the blame of everyone but herself.
What we can all learn from this and about our judicial system is that our judicial system sticks to the rules, “Its not what you know, its what you can prove in court” When you are found “not guilty” it doesn’t mean that the person is innocent, it means that there is reasonable doubt and that the prosecution did not do their job in proving guilt. We can not blame our judicial system for not doing their job, because they did. The angle the prosecution took was not the best, which resulted in their loss. Although Anthony will most likely walk a free woman even after being charged with perjury ( due to spending 3 years in jail already awaiting trial), this woman will never be free in society due to the impact that this story has had on millions around the world.

Cheating in Atlanta’s School System

An investigation held by the state of Georgia released news that the Atlanta school district is a part of a systematic cheating scandal. The results of the investigation show that cheating occurred in 44 of the schools and involved 178 teachers and principals, according to Governor Nathan Deal.

The cheating that occurred was done on a test that checked for students knowledge in certain subjects. It is reported that the teachers and principals changed students wrong answers to the correct one so they had  a higher passing rate for the district.

According to the interim superintendent, Errol B. Davis Jr., there will be dismissals and the possibility of criminal charges. The mayor of Atlanta says that “the cheating showed a complete failure of leadership that hurt thousands of children who might have been promoted to the next grade without meeting basic academic standards.”
