A Fantasy Come True

Author David Wellington (real name David Chandler) is best known for his zombie apocalypse novels called the Monster trilogy.  His reputation as a horror writer goes further with his vampire series and werewolf series.  Never before though, has he attempted to write and publish a fantasy series.

The Monster trilogy follows a group of people who survive when the undead overrun New York.  It also shows what happened before, how the epidemic broke out, and the results of the spread of the disease.

Wellington’s newest books, to be called the Ancient Blade trilogy, starts with Den of Thieves.  This new series differs drastically from his previous work as it takes place in medieval times and relies heavily on historical research of the time period.  The book’s protagonist, Malden, is a thief who is very good at his job and catches the attention of a guild of thieves, but must first prove himself worthy of their ranks.

The books started off as a therapeutic project and Wellington had no intention of actually publishing them until a friend read over the manuscripts and convinced him to go for it.  Always having been inspired by fantasy novels like J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and John Crowley’s Little Big, he decided to give it a try and found success as a first time fantasy writer.

No Makeup Makeover

High school is already hard enough without the pressure of standards of physical beauty, especially for girls.  Shelley College in Huddersfield, England brings an end to this pressure by putting a ban on makeup for female students between the ages of 14 and 16.  Makeup had already been prohibited against dress code for students under the age of 14, and those older than 16 are unaffected by the new policy because they are in the upper levels of the school.

When the bathrooms became overcrowded at lunchtime with too many girls spending time in front of the mirror to touch up on makeup, some even bringing their lunch in there with them to spend more time looking at their appearance, school officials decided it was time to take action.  Most students are in agreement with the new policy, claiming it takes off the pressure to pay so much attention to appearance.  Others are not happy with having to take off makeup altogether for the sake of academics.

Part of the policy change included taking down the mirrors in the bathroom.  The school’s new rule has resulted in an improvement on academics, as 75 percent more students have passed tests with a grade of A.

$97,000 is the price Casey Anthony must pay to the law enforcement agencies for their efforts to find her missing daughter, Caylee Anthony.

Originally, the Florida State’s Attorney office demanded Anthony pay over $500,000 in investigative and prosecution costs.  However, Chief Circuit Judge Belvin Perry rejected the notion and said he would only assess the costs from the missing persons part of the investigation, which is when Caylee was thought to still be alive.

Although Perry rejected the notion, he has given the rights to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office to raise the costs if necessary.

The $97,000 specifically breaks down into around $62,000 to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, roughly $10,000 to the Orlando Police Department’s Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation, and about $26,000 to the Orange County Sheriff’s office.

Perry is also requiring Anthony to pay a $50 assessment fee to the State Attorney’s offices for her four false statement charges.

There is currently no payment schedule for Anthony, who is serving a year probation sentence in an undisclosed location for an unrelated check fraud conviction.

Martin Singer, attorney for Scarlett Johansson, has sent out a cease-and-desist letter to several gossip sites who posted nude photos of the actress.

Singer has been threatening the sites, like Perez Hilton and The Dirty, to remove the stolen images or they’ll face a lawsuit.

The photos were taken from Johansson’s phone, which had been hacked into.  Two photos have been released, with one of a topless Johansson on a bed, and the other of a bottom shot in front of a mirror.

The FBI is currently involved in the case, which is supposedly part of a hacking ring.  The hacking ring allegedly involves over 50 female stars and includes the likes of Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, and Christina Aguilera.
