No More Feasting on Fido

If you weren’t sure about the veracity of the Chines cultural norm of eating dogs before, now you do.  There is a traditional dog-eating festival that takes place annually in the month of October.  It is hosted by the city of Qianxi and dates back 600 years.

The tradition began with a military victory during the Ming Dynasty.  During the attack, all dogs were killed so that their barks would not alert the people of the city of the army’s presence.  Once victory was proclaimed they feasted on dog meat, and thus the carnival became tradition.

What was once considered a typical dish by the Chinese is now being considered for a ban.  Legislation may pass after so many public opinion polls voiced their outrage with the practice.  It could help boost awareness for animal welfare.

Bulletproof Fashion

If you’re tired of bulky, Kevlar bulletproof vests, you’re not alone.  Colombian designer Miguel Caballero has come up with the solution to this ever pressing problem.

Setting up shop in New York (where coincidentally fashion and crime bloom at the same level), Caballero has created an Armani-esque fashion line that doubles as style and protection.  His pieces have been put to the test and passed for safety regulations established by the National Institute of Justice.

Caballero tests the pieces by actually shooting his employees whilst they wear the clothing.  He himself has undergone this testing twice.  So far, nothing has proved fatal.

The line contains various pieces of clothing that range for all needs, whether it’s formal wear or casual wear, and even for different climates.  It is also available for both men and women.  There are also various levels of protection, from hand guns to mini Uzis, and even sub-machine guns.

Caballero originally started the company in Bogota, Colombia with VIP and protection services in mind as the main demographic.  Soon though, he saw the times changing, and realized, everyone needs protection in this ever growing dangerous world.  He figured just because you need protection doesn’t mean it has to be a fashion eye sore.
