If you weren’t sure about the veracity of the Chines cultural norm of eating dogs before, now you do. There is a traditional dog-eating festival that takes place annually in the month of October. It is hosted by the city of Qianxi and dates back 600 years.
The tradition began with a military victory during the Ming Dynasty. During the attack, all dogs were killed so that their barks would not alert the people of the city of the army’s presence. Once victory was proclaimed they feasted on dog meat, and thus the carnival became tradition.
What was once considered a typical dish by the Chinese is now being considered for a ban. Legislation may pass after so many public opinion polls voiced their outrage with the practice. It could help boost awareness for animal welfare.
