Obama Speaks at Congressional Black Caucus

President Barack Obama told those at the Congressional Black Caucus that they need to stop crying and complaining and instead to join him in the fight for jobs.

Obama gave a speech at the Caucus’ annual award dinner and it’s believed to be his answer to talking to black leaders.  Many of them have become unhappy with how much he’s been giving in to the GOP and how high black unemployment, which is at 16.7 percent.

Obama said in his speech that blacks need to align with him if they want things done for them.  He recognized that blacks have been hit the hardest from the recession, but that they need to put on their marching shoes to get results.

“Shake it off.  Stop complainin’.  Stop grumblin’.  Stop cryin’.  We are going to press on.  We have work to do,” Obama said to those at the dinner.

Evidence Was Not Collected for Six Weeks in Amanda Knox Case

A video has been released that reveals critical evidence left at the crime scene of Meredith Kercher’s murder was not tested for over six weeks.

All of Kercher’s clothes were not taken as evidence and neither was the rock her attacker had thrown through a window to enter her and Amanda Knox’s flat.  These items were left alone until the second search was conducted 47 days later.

Some of the other evidence they did not collect includes a semen stain on Kercher’s pillow and a shoe stain of her killer.  Several of the previous evidence the police claimed they had, like Raffaele Sollecito’s DNA on Kercher’s bra clasp and Knox’s sweatshirt, have now been dismissed as evidence.

Fortunately for the police, a bloody handprint was left by killer, Rudy Guede, who is currently serving a 16 year sentence in jail.

Who is Herman Cain?

Herman Cain, a candidate for the Republican presidential race, has been having a good week.  He just won a straw poll in Florida, which has correctly predicted the Republican nominee since it’s been held, and had a good performance on Thursday, Sept. 22, debate.  But, who is Herman Cain?

Cain, 65, is the former Godfather’s Pizza chief executive and is currently a popular radio host.  He grew up in Georgia and is an alum of Morehouse College.  Cain began in the food industry by rescuing Burger King’s in Philadelphia, then took over Godfather’s Pizza in 1986.

By the 1990s, Cain had begun being more involved in politics.  He worked for the Federal Bank of Kansas City in 1992 and was head of the National Restraunt Association from 1994 to 1999.

Cain left Godfather’s Pizza for good in 1996 to devote himself to politics.  However, his results were far from good.  He failed to win the GOP primary vote for a U.S. Senate seat in Georgia and dropped out of the 2000 presidential race.

What has helped Cain though now in his run for the GOP nomination is that he’s not afraid to speak his mind and can create catchy slogan’s.  His “9 9 9” economic plan has been a popular one.

But whether Cain wins the nomination or not, the exposure will surely help boost his radio show and book sales.

Woman Arrested in Saudi Arabia for Driving

Najalaa Harriri, a Saudi activist, is going to court because she broke a ban that doesn’t allow women to drive.

Harriri was just one of many Saudi women who have been challenging the ban since June.  A video of several of the women driving was posted on social media websites.

She was questioned by a prosecutor general and will stand trial with several other women.

Saudi Arabia is the only country that bans women from driving.

The announcement of Harriri’s trial comes just one day after King Abdullah made a decree that allows women the right to vote and will allow them to run as candidates in the year 2015.  The decree also will let women be appointed to the Shura Council, an all-male consultative body.

Activists in the country were happy over the steps being made in the right direction, but are now disappointed in this new development, which hinders Saudi women’s rights.

A video of murder suspect Joran van der Sloot confessing he killed Stephany Flores has aired on Peruvian television.

The video is of Van der Sloot, who’s Dutch, answering police questions in Spanish, reasonably fluently, and is over a year old.  Van der Sloot was arrested for Flores’ death in a Lima hotel room and right after, he confessed to killing her.  However, a lawyer representing him at the time said the confession could not be used as evidence.

In the video, Van der Sloot describes how he killed Flores in his hotel room and as it progresses, he becomes extremely emotional.

Currently the video has not been proven to be authentic.

Mother Banned from School for Confronting Son’s Bullies

A mother has been banned from her son’s schools for confronting the two boys who bully him.

Tanya Sydney, from Minnesota, went with her 10-year-old son to his bus stop one day to complain to the driver.  Her son had told her that two boys would hit him on the bus and at school.

When the driver told her that he or she was doing their best, Sydney got on the bus and yelled at the boys.  This led to the bus driver to kick her off.

Sydney later received a letter from the principal at her son’s school that told her that she was banned from the school and can’t even be at her son’s bus stop.

Sydney is currently appealing the school’s decision.

AIDS Protein Structure Unlocked by Gamers

It only took gamers three weeks to crack the structure of a key protein in the development of AIDS using an online game called Foldit. Scientists previously made “a wide range of attempts to solve the crystal structure,” according to the journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, and the new discovery could mean a breakthrough for research in AIDS and HIV.

The protein, or retroviral protease, plays a crucial role in how HIV multiplies. Scientists plan to use this new information to aid in the development of drugs that would stop the protease from spreading.

Foldit was created by researchers at the University of Washington, giving gamers the opportunity to “solve puzzles for science.” The primary goal set for gamers is to predict the unknown structure of proteins using spatial and critical thinking skills. They are challenged to build 3D models of protease by folding the protein into a shape that will ideally translate into a scientific representation of the protein.

Other breakthroughs have been made in the science field using Foldit, especially in Cancer and Alzheimer’s research. Creators expect to “take folding strategies that humans have come up with  while playing the game, and automate these strategies to make protein-prediction software more effective.” Since there are currently not a lot of automated methods to design protein, Foldit’s human folders don’t have to worry about competition from ‘the machines.’
