Najalaa Harriri, a Saudi activist, is going to court because she broke a ban that doesn’t allow women to drive.
Harriri was just one of many Saudi women who have been challenging the ban since June. A video of several of the women driving was posted on social media websites.
She was questioned by a prosecutor general and will stand trial with several other women.
Saudi Arabia is the only country that bans women from driving.
The announcement of Harriri’s trial comes just one day after King Abdullah made a decree that allows women the right to vote and will allow them to run as candidates in the year 2015. The decree also will let women be appointed to the Shura Council, an all-male consultative body.
Activists in the country were happy over the steps being made in the right direction, but are now disappointed in this new development, which hinders Saudi women’s rights.
