Gingrich’s Popularity Rises

Newt Gingrich may be the new trend in the Republican presidential election.

Gingrich has suddenly had good debate performances, where he focuses less on his GOP rivals and more on the Obama administration.

CBS political analyst Brian Montropoli, Sarah Palin, and University of Virginia Political Science professor Larry Sabato believed Gingrich won Oct. 18’s debate.

Despite this new development it’s surprising Gingrich is still even in the race.  His entire senior staff resigned in June and when his fellow candidates were in Iowa campaigning, he was on a long vacation cruise with his wife.

And while no one really believes Gingrich can win the election, many believe he’s helping create a stronger and more serious race.

Drivers Warn Others of Speed Traps

Many drivers are working together to prevent each other from getting tickets.

One county where this is occurring is Volusia County in Florida.  Around 2,900 drivers earned tickets between 2005 and 2009 for flashing their headlights to warn others of speed traps.

In September a lawsuit was filed against the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office for falsely issuing tickets.  The office has stated that they would stop the practice for now.

Biden says We Need Jobs Plan to Lower Crime Rates

Vice President Joe Biden stated that lawmakers needed to pass the job’s bill because crime rates have spiked thanks to police layoffs.

Biden spoke on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Capitol Hill to police officers, firefighters, and teachers.

He said that since police officers have been laid off due to budget issues, murder rates, robberies, and rapes have gone up.  He also spoke of how the first piece of the jobs plan that is being considered is about police officers, firefighters, and teachers.

President Barack Obama is currently on a three-day tour to discuss his jobs plan and how he is seeking to pass the $447 billion plan in pieces.

A Record High of Deported Undocumented Immigrants

400,000 is the number of immigrants that were deported by the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement last month during the end of the fiscal year.  The number has broken yet another record in it’s third year in a row.

Deseret News reports that the majority of the deported immigrants had felony or misdemeanor convictions.  This has become a major problem with people who aren’t quick to get on board with the deportation of the undocumented immigrants as some of them have only committed minor misdemeanors, including setting up roadside carts or even reporting domestic violence. It has made immigrants more reluctant to call the police.

Joanne Lin, legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union comments on the unnecessary enforcement. “These record-breaking deportation numbers come at a time when illegal immigration rates have plummeted, the undocumented population has decreased substantially and violent crime rates are at their lowest levels in 40 years. Our country can no longer afford to pay for uncontrolled, unwarranted DHS spending, at the cost to U.S. taxpayers.”

Many argue that Obama’s administration is also not being aggressive enough in enforcing immigration laws.

Details on Republican Debate

Mitt Romney, Rick Perry, and Herman Cain all took part in a heated debate on Tuesday, as the Republican challengers debated over topical issues such as illegal immigration and Cain’s 9-9-9 plan.

It appeared to be that Romney was the main receiver of blows, especially from Rick Perry regarding the illegal immigration issue and how the former Massachusetts governor hired illegal Latin American workers to cut his lawn, even though he fired them as soon as he found out.  Romney shot back at the Perry, the governor of Texas, “Texas has had a 60 percent increse in illegal immigrants in Texas. If there’s someone who has a record as governor with regards to illegal immigration that doesn’t stand up to muster, it’s you, not me.”

While Romney is having a hard time convincing conservatives that he is apart of their party, Cain was also receiving a few hits about his 999 plan.  It was only noticeable that he had nothing to say when his rivals brought up flaws in the plan, like the 9 percent national sales tax for example, and that he stated that “their only strategy is to attack me.”

Evidently, polls show that Romney will mostly likely be in the lead in the Republican party against Obama in 2012.

Boy Not Allowed to Bring Saxophone on Bus

Andrew DiMarzio, 12, is in the band at his Mass. middle school and brings home his saxophone to practice.  However, despite being the size of a large backpack and that other students bring athletic equipment, he cannot bring his instrument on the bus.

The school district claims that the bus is at capacity and the saxophone is a safety hazard.

Andrew’s mother Cathy Dimarzio is very upset over the situation.  She says because she works she cannot pick and drop him off from school everyday.

Officials have told Dimarzio that policy is that instruments larger than a clarinet or flute cannot be on the bus, but she claims to not have seen this in writing.

The school is currently trying to solve the issue by offering different situations, like storing the instrument at school, to accommodate Andrew.

Aside from going to court and being escorted away in handcuffs, Lindsay Lohan was served with a civil suit yesterday, Oct. 19.

The civil suit was filed by the ex-employee from the Betty Ford Clinic who said that Lohan assaulted her last year during her rehab stint.  It was apparently filed in July by Dawn Bradley, but was not given to Lohan until now.

In the court papers, Bradley accused the actress of grabbing and twisting her right wrist because she had confronted Lohan about violating the rehab’s no drinking policy.

Bradley is seeking over $1 million in damages.

In other Lohan news, the actress had her probation revoked at yesterday’s date in court and may face jail time.  Lohan posted her $100,000 bail and will be back in court on Nov. 2.

An investigation has been opened into the death of a 16-year old boy and his 22-year old brain dead brother from a composting facility.

The boy, Armand Ramirez from Arvin, Calif., was pronounced dead on Oct. 12 after inhaling hydrogen sulfide fumes at Community Recycling and Resource Co.’s facility in Lamont, Calif.  An autopsy is currently being done.

His brother, Eladio, has been pronounced brain dead.  There was also two other men, whose names have not been released, with the brothers.

The four men were found inside an 8-foot-deep drainage tunnel at the composting facility.

Prior to this tragic event, apparently the brothers had complained of a strange smell at the facility, but they were only given painters masks for protection.
