On November 7, Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson’s personal physician, was convicted for involuntary manslaughter, Los Angeles Times reports. The case was held in a windowless courtroom with some of Jackson’s family and loving fans.

The verdict that the jury found was that Murray “acted with criminal negligence and that those actions were a substantial factor in Jackson’s 2009 death.” The statements that led to the final verdict was the overdose of the sedative and dangerous surgical anesthetic, propofol in an unmonitored setting. Witnesses also testified that Murray took his time notifying the police by sending emails and texting after Jackson overdosed.

People who were in the courtroom and waiting outside with the proceedings airing on their laptops and phones heard more about the beloved pop singer about his past drug use and finances.  Jackson was “plagued” with insomnia and carried the pressure of the 50 concerts he planned before his unfortunate death.

Murray’s pending sentence is due for November 29.

Godfrey went to trial on Nov. 4.

Close Call With An Asteroid

It has been 35 years since Earth last had an asteroid of such large proportions come close to its atmosphere, but on Tuesday that record was broken by 2005 YU55.  Scientists claim that there is no possibility of collision, but the asteroid does come to the 202,000 mile mark, which is within the Moon’s orbit of Earth.

Experts say this event won’t happen again until 2028.  NASA’s Deep Space Network scientists have continued tracking the asteroid, which measures out to a quarter of a mile wide.  The asteroid began its trek in Earth’s direction at about 29,000 mph coming from the direction of the Sun.

As close as it came to Earth’s orbit, it is still too small to see with the naked eye.  That’s why observatories like the Clay Center in Brookline, Mass. kept its doors open all night for a viewing party for children and their parents.  Anyone who did not get access to a telescope that night was offered a livestream video by the observatory.

The repercussions of an asteroid the size of 2005 YU55 hitting Earth would be quite devastating.  If it impacted against land it would create a crater spanning 4 miles wide and 1,700 feet deep.  If it made contact with water it would cause tsunami waves that would reach up to 70 feet high.  This is probably why scientists have been monitoring its orbit for the past six years, making sure it doesn’t come any closer to hitting Earth.

Obama Health Care Law Upheld

President Obama’s latest reform of health care law requires all American citizens to buy health insurance or pay a penalty on taxes.  The constitutionality of the law was upheld on Tuesday by an appeals court.  The case is being prepared to pass on to the Supreme Court this week.

The law was upheld and turned over to Supreme Court ruling because the appeals court for the District of Columbia remained split on the issue, thus leaving it at a stalemate and making it the problem of a higher ruling.

The law is set to commence in the year 2014.  Seattle Times reports it is “the most controversial requirement of Obama’s signature domestic legislative achievement” and it is a central issue splitting judges across the country.

The law’s constitutionality was challenged by the American Center for Law and Justice, a legal group originally founded by Pat Robertson, an evangelist.  The group made the claim that the law infringed upon American citizens’ freedom of religion, as the legislation’s mandate forces those who do not believe in medicine and science to buy a product that goes against their beliefs.  It also forces Americans in general to buy something for the rest of their lives regardless of whether they want to or not.

Upon the court’s ruling, the statement released said Congress had the power to pass such legislation to ensure all Americans have health care coverage, even if it encroaches on individual liberties.  The argument is that freedom from federal regulation is not absolute and that if the government has the chance to make national solutions for national problems then the violation of certain freedoms is acceptable.

One judge, Brett Kavanaugh, argues it is unlawful to review the health care legislation as it has yet to pass.  He feels it should not be brought to court before its initiation in 2014.  Regardless of such feelings, some, like Jay Sekulow, the chief counsel of the group that brought the suit to begin with, believe the law will ultimately be ruled as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.
