Facebook Flooded with Graphic Images. Who’s to Blame?

After reports of the popular networking site Facebook being overhauled with graphic images, the company confirms the problem.

Facebook has been spammed with images portraying  pornography, violence, self mutilation, and bestiality over the last few days. A spokesperson from the networking site have said they are aware of the problem and investigating the issue.  They also stated that the Facebook users protection and privacy is their top priority during this time.

Members of  Facebook are outraged by the images showing up on their news feed without their consent.  Facebook currently has 800 million active members, and it is still unclear how many of these active members have been affected.

Already, the ‘hacktivist’ group Anonymous has been blamed for this attack as they were rumored to have plans for taking down the site on November 5. Since the group has not confirmed it was their doing, there is no proof that Anonymous is to blame for this problem.

Hip Surgery Becomes Hip Despite Doubt of Effectiveness

In the popular world of sports many athletes suffer from injuries and wounds involving their bones and muscles.  One of these irksome conditions takes place in the hips.  Hip pain comes from the bones having unusual shapes or rough edges that rub against soft tissue and cause fraying and tearing of the tendons and muscles.  The solution to the problem: hip impingement.

The process of this surgery consists of shaving down the bones to make them smooth and evenly shaped.  Usually though it is also combined with other procedures that repair damaged tissues.  The problem this causes is its validity as a cure to the hip pain.  It makes it difficult for doctors and researchers to officially say if shaving down the bone is what’s making the pain go away, or if it’s just the reparation of the tendons damaged.

Athletes are not the only ones who are having this surgery these days.  Many doctors are now recommending it for anyone with hip pain problems.  Some even think it can prevent arthritis from developing.  The problem with this theory though is that arthritis takes several years to show signs of development, so without following the progress of a patient for many years after the operation, there’s no way to tell if that claim is true or not.

Another complication with the popular surgery is calculating cost.  Since it is often combined with other procedures patients get billed with statements written in several codes, making it hard to read and understand the breakdown.  The most accurate data gathered so far for the costs is the hip impingement being just over $4,000 and then the other procedures costing about the same as well.  None of this includes hospital charges or physical rehab charges.  And of course, insurance companies don’t cover nearly enough of the costs to justify having the surgery.

Many questions remain about the body’s conditions and the surgery that may or may not help it.  It is not yet known if the bumps and jagged edges are normal variations and doctors still do not have an answer for whether or not the shaved bone will grow back.

CNN Lay-Offs

It has been reported that the Cable News Network, better known as CNN, recently lay off 50 workers within its employment.  Among the unfortunates were librarians, photojournalists, and technicians.  The reason for the sudden lay-offs: a change in work flow and technological advances.

The cuts that took place were from the newsrooms of Miami, Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York, and D.C.  A part of the money saving changes to be made is the movement of certain departments that can work with the minimum will be transferred over to Atlanta.

The process of letting employees go took place during employee appreciation week.  Those cut loose were taken by surprise and according to one now former staff member CNN “is not the friendly company it used to be” and whether it is because of the economy or ratings is not clear.

Another employee in the know stated that the lay-offs were more than 50 and closer to 70.

To add salt to the wounds, after letting many of its employees go, the company’s Atlanta office immediately hired new people for about the same number cut and did not invite those let go to apply for newly created positions.  It gave the cut employees the options of accepting severance pay or reapplying for jobs with broader descriptions.

According to CNN’s Senior Vice President, Jack Womack, the company’s goal is to reduce the number of media editors within its Image + Sound department.  In an e-mail to the staff he claimed the assessment came after a three-year analysis of the company’s costs and work habits.  Although the e-mail was made known to the public, CNN has yet to make an official statement on the issue.

Kim Kardashian has hired lawyer, Marty Singer, to silence her ex-publicist, Jonathan Jaxson, who claimed that her 72-day marriage to basketball player, Kris Humphries was a sham, according to Reuters.

It is reported that Kardashian is suing Jaxson for $200,000 in legal damages, after Jaxson told “Good Day L.A.” that he worked for Kardashian from 2007-2009 and that the marriage was staged, according to TMZ.

Kardashian claims that Jaxson had only worked with her on one project, a blog, and that he is in fact violating a signed confidentiality document, according to Reuters.

Jaxson wrote on his personal blog that stated, “To the best of my knowledge, I have never signed an agreement dealing with confidentiality with Kim Kardashian. I have an agreement in my possession that does not have either parties signature on it,” according to Reuters.

Jaxson also told the “Elvis Duran Morning Show,” that she knew weeks prior that she did not want to marry Humphries, for she has still not gotten over her ex-boyfriend, football player, Reggie Bush, according to Reuters.

Sandusky Claims He Only Showered with Boys

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky claimed that he’s not a pedophile and didn’t sexually assault any boys.  He insists that he only showered and “horsed around” with them.

Sandusky recently admitted in a phone interview that aired Monday on NBC News’ Rock Center that he hugged the boys, touched their legs and would shower with them after workouts.  He regrets showering with them.

Sandusky’s lawyer, Joe Amendola, told NBC’s Today show that one of the boys is telling the alleged shower encounter in a much different way than what was witnessed.  He also suggested that the alleged victims may be revealing their stories to get money from the university.

Amendola, in a separate interview with CNN, said the showers did not involve sexual activity and are something athletes normally do.

Many legal and crisis management experts are surprised at how Sandusky and Amendola are handing the situation though.

CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin said that the fact that Sandusky admitted to showering with the young boys is damaging enough and may hurt his case.  Crisis consultant Eric Dezenhall believes their strategy is risky.

Sandusky was charged on Nov. 5 with molesting eight boys over the course of 15 years.  He was set free on $100,000 bail.
