Demi Moore was reportedly rushed to the hospital late Jan. 24 to be treated for what her representative is saying is “exhaustion,” but whom many are reporting for “substance abuse” and “anorexia.”

The actress and mother-of-three recently has appeared thin in photos.  She was taken to the hospital by the ambulance following a 911 call around 11 pm, when Moore supposedly suffered a seizure.  She was with a female friend when she began shaking.

Website Rader is claiming that she is being treated for anorexia and other substance abuse issues.

The 49-year-old star has been appearing more gaunt since her split with 33-year-old soon-to-be ex-husband Ashton Kutcher.  The couple announced in November 2011 that they were separating.  Neither has filed divorce papers yet.

Many are currently giving Kutcher some flack for being in Brazil and partying on the night that Moore was admitted to the hospital.  Kutcher is currently in the South American country for fashion week.  He was seen enjoying a beer with friends at a Bruno Mars gig that night.

Moore’s spokesperson has refused to comment on the substance abuse claim.

20% of Americans Suffer From Mental Illness

According to a new government study, 1 in 5 American adults, or 20%, reported having had a mental illness in the last year.

The figure rose to around 30% for those between the ages of 18-25, which is much higher than the 14.3% reported in patients 50 and older.

Of the nearly 46 million American adults who reportedly had a mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder, 60% didn’t receive treatment for their condition.  The most likely reason for so is not most can’t afford the care.

Researchers from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) stated that while 20% of the population is rather high, only 5% reported having serious issues which interfered with their lives.

Unfortunately 30% of those with serious mental illness also didn’t receive treatment.

Those most likely to have a higher risk of getting a mental illness in 2010 were the unemployed, Medicaid beneficiaries, those living below the poverty line, and young patients.  Women have a higher risk then men, from 23% versus 16.8%.

The study also revealed that around 8.7 million people have seriously contemplated suicide, while 2.5 million had actually made plans.  Just above a million patients had actually attempted to commit suicide.

Signs of mental illness are also affecting American youth, children between the ages of 12 and 17.  Around 8% reported having a major depressive episode, meaning feeling depressed for at least two weeks.  Children who reported feeling this way were more likely to try or use drugs than those who didn’t.

These findings have only emphasized that the United States needs a better mental health treatment system and way for people to pay for the treatment.

Japanese Player Yu Darvish Signs to Rangers

Yu Darvish has signed to the Texas Rangers.

The 6-foot-5 Japanese pitcher has dominated the Japanese competition for the last five years.  His worst ERA, or earned run average, was at 1.88, which is lower than the best ERA ever posted in Japan by other famous Japanese players, like Matsuzaka and Kaz Ishii.  Darvish has punched out 272 in 232 innings during last season in Japan and only walked 30 unintentionally.

Darvish has a good arm speed, between 91-95 mph, thanks to hip rotation.  His fastball has even reached a reported 97 mph last season, and he plans to mix it with hard slider/cutters, a softer slider, a splitter, and a slow curveball.

The amount of pitches that Darvish will use is more than a typical MLB starter would use.  He’ll most likely narrow it down to around 4 different types of pitches to eb most effective.

Darvish signed to the Rangers for $20 million a year.

Nigerian City Police Stations Targeted with Bombs

Kano, the second largest Nigerian city, has a death toll of at least 131 and may even have more than 150 from Jan. 20th’s bomb attack.

The city had a strict 24-hour curfew for another night as shocked police attempted to come to terms with the loss of some colleagues, as well as the security lapse that unfortunately allowed at least six attacker teams to strike at the same time.  Kano is currently under a news blackout as police search the city for suspects.

The targets of the bombs were mostly the city’s main police headquarters, including the office of the State Security Service.

There is indications that many officers died, however it it impossible to know the exact number.

At one hospital alone there is around 130 dead bodies, and 36 people with injuries.  The two other hospitals where victims were taken have not provided any numbers, which has made it hard to verify an exact death toll.

The Islamist radical group Boko Haram is currently claiming responsibility for the bombings.  The alleged reason why the police facilities were targeted is because authories haven’t released arrested members of the group.

Boko Haram is also to blame for other bombings in the past year, including one on Christmas Day that killed dozens of worshippers at a Catholic church.  The name Boko Haram translates into “Western education is sacriligious,” in the Hausa language of northern Nigeria.

Nigeria, which has a population of around 160 million, is pretty evenly divided between the predominantly Muslim north and the mostly Christian south.
