In Cayce, South Carolina, Gerald B. Hardin and one other person severed the hand of an acquaintance in order to receive over $671,000 from four different insurance claims as a result of the incident.
Hardin and a friend used a small chain saw to amputate the hand off of a third party. Said person was then rushed to local Charlotte hospital where doctors unsuccessfully tried to reattach the hand. An investigation from the FBI led to the fraud charges.
Hardin faces six different crimes, one of them being insurance fraud. If he is convicted, Hardin could face up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines. The court could also force all three parties to pay back the money they earned from the insurance claims in full, if they are convicted.
Currently, Hardin is out of the Lexington County Detention Center after posting $100,00 bond.
