Recent Reports on College Hazing

Fourteen Boston University students are currently facing complaints of “hazing, failure to report hazing, battery and assault” after Boston police discovered five male students restrained in a fraternity’s basement, nude, and “battered like Asian chicken wings”.

Initially, the police were investigating complaints of loud noise when they found that the five male students had been physically assaulted and covered in products such as mustard and hot sauce. The alleged perpetrators are members from the unofficial BU fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi.

Even though none of the five assaulted students pressed charges or requested any medical treatment, the fourteen fraternity members involved may still face legal action. Hazing is illegal in Massachusetts, and police reported that some of the victims were obviously in shock and “terrified” after they were found.

In addition to the abovementioned charges, some of the fraternity members may face charges such as keeping a disorderly house. Even though this incident occurred off campus, the perpetrators may face expulsion from BU, as the university’s judicial board is said to be handling this case.

Latest updates state that this thirty-member chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi has been shut down.

Moreover, a 2009 Dartmouth college grad, Ravital Segal, recently published an article on the Huffington Post titled, “Hazing Confessions of a Dartmouth Alum”, in which she recounts an incident during rush week when she was a sophomore.

Specifically, she states that older sorority members of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority blindfolded her, put her in the backseat of car, and subsequently ordered her to drink numerous alcoholic beverages one after the other. Ultimately, the next day she found herself in the hospital having been admitted due to an alcohol overdose. Her blood content was a lethal .399; a .4 alcohol level is mostly associated with a coma and death. Later, she learned that another pledge had overdosed, as well. Despite this, she states she did not file charges and even told Dartmouth administration that no hazing had taken place.

Amid such discussions, many are prompting alums to come forward with their stories as well as current students to report any hazing incidents in order to prevent future trauma and tragedies.

Rick Santorum Ends Presidential Campaign

On Tuesday, April 10, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum unexpectedly announced he was ending his presidential campaign. Initially, he referenced his concern over his three-year-old daughter’s health, but today he painted a different picture for why he is exiting the presidential race.

Santorum stated in a radio interview with Tony Perkins, Family Research Council President, that he grew uneasy with the size of his campaign’s debt and even disclosed that, after his defeat in Wisconsin, no further money had been raised.

Moreover, he felt that he simply could not rival the multi-million dollar advertisting campaign Romney is equipped with. However, he did acknowledge the effective strategies his former opponent’s campaign implemented.

The impossibility of keeping Romney from amassing 1,144 delegates (which is said to be the number needed to win the nomination) before the convention further discouraged Santorum from continuing his campaign. This became especially apparent to him after Romney’s wins in the Wisconsin, District of Columbia, and Maryland primaries.

Although the former Pennsylvania governor said he will support Romney, he did not seem to fully approve of his former opponent’s mission or ideology. He specifically stated, “For conservatives we have to get conditioned to understand that you’re going to be fed a steady diet of establishment candidate as long as we go along with the ideas that winning is what matters and not what is the right issues to go out and win with.”

Fear of Pranksters at Olympics

Security has been tightened for the Olympics, but not because of terrorism, but because of terrorist attacks, but because of three notorious pranksters of the United Kingdom.

Karl Power, Tommy Dunn, and his son Tommy Jr. have become famous by infiltrating some of Britain’s most high-profile sporting events. They have been in a Manchester United team photo, walked onto the field during a critical international cricket match, and have bugged the meeting room at the hotel where several English soccer team members were staying and hoaxed the captain John Terry.

The rumors are that the trio is staging their most epic stunt ever for the Olympics. This fear comes in the wake of the protestor who swam into the middle of the River Thames during the University Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge. The United Kingdom does not want to embarrass itself on the national stage.

Though the stunts of Dunn, Dunn, and Powers have never interfered with the sporting event itself, the Olympic bosses would still feel embarrassed if a breach did happen in their security.

Toth, a former private school teacher in Maryland, was charged with having child pornography on his camera in 2008. There is also an unreleased report in Washington, D.C. that reportedly charges Toth with having pornographic video, including images with children.

In 2009, Toth was believed to be living in Arizona. The FBI also believes he has resided in other states such as Virginia, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. If Toth is caught, he could face up to 30 years in prison.

Eric Toth is the 459th person to be placed on the Most Wanted list. There is currently a reward of $100,000 for information that leads to his arrest.

U.K. Trying to Eliminate Tax Breaks for Millionaires

Chancellor George Osborne wants to limit tax breaks for millionaires who make substantial donations to charities. The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, claims that many multimillionaires are donating to charities to simply “wipe out” their income tax bills.

Osborne was reportedly “shocked” by the number of people who donate in order to receive a substantial tax break. The Chancellor was shown official reports this week from some of the richest people in the country, which showed the number of loopholes some of these millionaires are using.

Many charities are not happy with the efforts to stop these millionaires. Donations are considerably down, and some of these non-profits are already suffering during these economic times. 1,800 charities, including Unicef, have signed a petition which was organized by the Charities Aid Foundation to stop the changes.

Universities, such as Cambridge University, are also concerned about their funds decreasing. Cambridge describes charitable donations as the “bedrock” of their funding.

Some of the millionaires, such as Lord Harris of Peckham, claim that they will give less to charities if these changes are made. Sir Tom Hunter called the move “stupid” on the government’s part.
