On Tuesday, April 10, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum unexpectedly announced he was ending his presidential campaign. Initially, he referenced his concern over his three-year-old daughter’s health, but today he painted a different picture for why he is exiting the presidential race.

Santorum stated in a radio interview with Tony Perkins, Family Research Council President, that he grew uneasy with the size of his campaign’s debt and even disclosed that, after his defeat in Wisconsin, no further money had been raised.

Moreover, he felt that he simply could not rival the multi-million dollar advertisting campaign Romney is equipped with. However, he did acknowledge the effective strategies his former opponent’s campaign implemented.

The impossibility of keeping Romney from amassing 1,144 delegates (which is said to be the number needed to win the nomination) before the convention further discouraged Santorum from continuing his campaign. This became especially apparent to him after Romney’s wins in the Wisconsin, District of Columbia, and Maryland primaries.

Although the former Pennsylvania governor said he will support Romney, he did not seem to fully approve of his former opponent’s mission or ideology. He specifically stated, “For conservatives we have to get conditioned to understand that you’re going to be fed a steady diet of establishment candidate as long as we go along with the ideas that winning is what matters and not what is the right issues to go out and win with.”
