After being newly engaged to Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie was honored with the title of U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Tuesday.

Jolie has worked for the organization for the past 10 years as a goodwill ambassador. She’s traveled to refugee camps around the world in places like Haiti, Iraq, and Syria. After her extensive work, she will represent the UNHCR at the diplomatic level to governments and diplomats.

UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards said, “In her new role, she is expected to focus on large-scale crises resulting in the mass displacement of people. I don’t think you need a rocket scientist to see the benefits that she is bringing in terms of the attention that she is getting for the plight of the world’s displaced. That can mean conveying messages to governments. It can mean conveying messages to other people and partners that we work with.”

Tupac Lives On

The biggest shock at the Coachella music festival in California on Sunday was the sight of rapper Tupac Shakur on stage with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg.

His imaged was created by Digital Domain Media Group, Inc., who was behind the images of Brad Pitt in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” The movements of Shakur were not found or archived footage. It was all an illusion of his body.

There are plans in the works for a virtual tour featuring Shakur with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. The idea to create a virtual Tupac was discussed a year ago, with the production starting four months before the festival.

Dr. Dre has a large vision for this virtual tour, though it’s not guaranteed to happen, and would take many months to plan.

Motion to Have Judge Removed Filed

A motion has been filed to remove Judge Jessica Recksiedler from the George Zimmerman case after revelations that her husband works with a CNN legal analyst.

Her husband is the law partner of Mark Nejarme, the attorney whom Zimmerman first approached about representing him before Mark O’Mara. Nejarme has since commented in the media about the case and now provides analysis about it for CNN.

Nejarme declined when Zimmerman approached him the first time because he didn’t want the pressure of such a high profile case. When a friend of Zimmerman asked Nejarme again, Nejarme had already become a CNN analyst and instead helped set Zimmerman up with O’Mara.

There are also petitions to reverse the order to seal the court documents in the prosecution. The media argues that publicity is not synonymous with prejudice and impartiality, and those jurors who will let their biases influence them will be ruled out during juror screenings.

O’Mara said to keep the documents sealed to keep information about witnesses safe. He’s concerned they might be contacted and put in danger if certain information gets released.

Zimmerman is currently waiting for his bail hearing on Friday.

Runners Facing the Heat

The runners of the Boston Marathon pushed through the unseasonably warm day just to finish the race after they were asked to please put their safety before their competitive drive.

While 22, 500 participants began the race, 4,300 people chose instead to drop out to avoid the heat. 120 people were taken to the hospital, and 2,000 people had to receive serious medical attention. One participant was taken out of the race in serious condition, but there has been no word yet.

The highest recorded temperature of the race was recorded in Framingham at 12:30pm. It was 89 degrees.

Those runners who chose to not participate will have the opportunity to run in the race the next year. The crowd still showed up despite the heat wave, doing their best to cheer on the athletes to keep them going.

New Google Security Checks Use House Numbers, Accused of Privacy Invasion

With the inclusion of a new security process, Google users are asked to read and copy random property numbers to gain access to the page.

The tests weed out “bots” by ensuring those typing in the information are indeed human. The pictures of house numbers have been taken from doors and fences through Google’s Street View mapping service.

Not only is Google accused of invading privacy, but the company is also accused of exploiting the data submitted for commercial gain since it adds the information to its own mapping system.

Nick Pickles, director of privacy and civil liberties at Big Brother Watch said, “There is a serious privacy issue with identifying the individual number of people’s homes.”

Pickles continued to say there was no such “public interest” use in retyping house numbers.

“It is clear that Google sees the people who use its services as a commodity to be used up,” said Pickles. “To use the public as unwitting data loggers is both underhand and crude.”
