The runners of the Boston Marathon pushed through the unseasonably warm day just to finish the race after they were asked to please put their safety before their competitive drive.
While 22, 500 participants began the race, 4,300 people chose instead to drop out to avoid the heat. 120 people were taken to the hospital, and 2,000 people had to receive serious medical attention. One participant was taken out of the race in serious condition, but there has been no word yet.
The highest recorded temperature of the race was recorded in Framingham at 12:30pm. It was 89 degrees.
Those runners who chose to not participate will have the opportunity to run in the race the next year. The crowd still showed up despite the heat wave, doing their best to cheer on the athletes to keep them going.
