In an endeavor to create “lighter, stronger armor for troops and vehicles”, the US Army has granted prestigious Johns Hopkins University $90 million.

Specifically, the Army intends to give this great amount of money to the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute over a period of five years. The main objective is to create equally protective yet lighter armor.

A range of programs considers this mission to be of paramount importance in order to ensure greater efficiency and safety for the troops. Moreover, individuals like defense analyst Andrew Krepinevich maintain that it is only worthwhile investing when there are breakthroughs in armor materials science.

Currently, the Army wants to improve the Ground Combat Vehicle (GCV) by replacing armor plates with “modular armor”, as more efficient materials are engineered.
