Colonoscopy Popular Method of Screening Amongst Wealthy

Amongst the wealthy, a colonoscopy has become the most popular method of screening for colon cancer.

In the study, which has been published in the journal Cancer, those above the poverty line have opted in for a colonoscopy, while those under prefer the at-home testing.

According to Dr. Chyke Doubeni, a professor at the University of Massachusetts who was not apart of the study, the results have revealed that in order to insure that those who are below the poverty line are getting screened all types of colon cancers tests should be offered.

A colonoscopy is a procedure which uses a camera known as the endoscope to look out for signs of cancer in the colon and rectum, while the home-based tests look for blood in the stool.  If the test is positive, a colonoscopy is then recommended to see if their are cancerous growths within the person’s intestine.

People are advised to start getting screened for colon cancer at the age of 50, as most people’s risk of developing the cancer in one in 20.
