First Court Hearing for 9/11 Suspects

Self-confessed terrorist Khalid Sheikh Mohammed made his first court appearance since 2008 last Friday, May 4.

Along with four alleged co-conspirators (Ramzi bin al-Shibh, Walid bin Attash, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, and Mustafa al Hawsawi), he arrived in the courtroom at the Guantanamo US naval base for an arraignment. All five are set to be tried for their roles in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, as they are being charged with 2,976 individual counts of murder and may receive the death penalty. Specifically, their accusations involve “planning, organizing, and financing” the terrorist attacks.

Taking out their earphones for the Arabic translation, all five men chose to maintain a non-cooperative stance when addressed; they remained silent even when the judge questioned them whether they “accepted their defense team.” Their team includes military lawyers and civilian attorneys who are experts in death penalty cases.

Mohammed’s civilian lawyer David Nevin said, “The reason that he is not putting the earphones on is because of the torture that was inflicted upon him.” Particularly, according to a US federal report, Mohammed was interrogated 183 times through use of waterboarding, a controversial practice that simulates drowning.

However, military judge Col James Pohl made it clear that the hearing would proceed despite the lack of cooperation from the defendants.

After nine hours, the lawyers of the five men announced that their clients decided to defer their pleas, which subsequently permits them to take their legal obligations to the tribunal. The defense team further suggested that a trial date be set at least a year later.

The procession of events deeply contrasted with Mohammed’s December 2008 court appearance when he “tried to confess and plead guilty and declared his desire to be a martyr”, further celebrating his culpability for the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Among those watching the hearing were five family members of victims that attended the arraignment and others that watched from four northeast US military bases through video-stream.

Maureen Basnicki, 61, whose husband Ken died in the attacks, commented, “Part of me was trying to get a sense of justice and to understand why these men were so full of hate that they would slaughter so many innocent civilians, though I always doubted those questions would be answered for me.”

Obama Announces Support for Same-Sex Marriage

President Barack Obama has declared his support for same-sex marriage.

After several years of avoiding the question, Obama revealed his opinion in a hastily-arranged interview with ABC News.  He was slightly forced to publicly announce his support after remarks by Vice President Joe Biden were made over the weekend.

Obama said in the interview that he had always been a supporter of civil unions, but his position on marriage began to evolve due to the traditions and religious beliefs attached to the word marriage.

The president said that he was most persuaded to change his opinion due to lesbians and gay men who are serving in the military.

“At a certain point I just concluded, for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama said.

His opinion is currently only a symbolic one, as he has stated he respects the decisions of the 30-states who currently have constitutional bans against gay marriage, including the recently added North Carolina, who just passed a law on this on May 8.

But, regardless of this, Obama is now the first president to publicly announce his support for same-sex marriage.

On Monday and Tuesday, two different reports on obesity rates in the U.S. were released at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Weight of the Nation conference in Washington D.C.

According to the study, 42% of Americans could be obese by the year 2030, and nearly 11% would be severely obese. Currently, about 34% of adults are obese, while 6% are severely obese.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM), which conducted the study and released the reports, concluded that obesity is a result of an individual’s environment, rather than a person’s lack of will power.

In order to stop the epidemic, the IOM issued a list of recommendations, which included taxing beverages with high sugar content, such as sodas. The IOM also said that action needs to be taken across all levels of society.

Al Qaeda Bomber was Actually a Double Agent

An al Qaeda affiliate sent to blow up an airplane last month was actually a double agent working with the CIA.

Saudi Arabia’s intelligence agency placed the operative in one of the most dangerous and determined affiliates of al Qaeda in the world, the al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP.

The device was made to be smuggled onboard the aircraft and detonated, all while being undetected. The bomb appeared to be an upgraded version of the “underwear bomb,” which failed to detonate on a passenger jet on Christmas Day in 2009. It also had signs that it was made by the feared al Qaeda bomb maker Ibrahim Hassan Asiri.

The agent delivered the device to U.S. and other intelligence agencies outside of Yemen. The agent arrived safely to an unnamed country and is being debriefed.

His information led the CIA locate top al Qaeda operative Fahd al-Qasaa, who was killed Sunday when a CIA drone targeted him as he stepped out of his car in Yemen.
