After making a hospital visit to treat a kidney stone, a man in Colorado was given some unexpected news.

Five years ago, Steve Crecelius, a photographer based in Denver, was told that he “had both male genitalia and internal female sex organs” after he was admitted to the emergency room.

Crecelius, who is married to a woman and has six children, admitted that he always felt “a little different all his life”, as he developed feminine feelings, and was thus not too surprised with the revelation. However, now, he says he is supported by his family and goes by the name Stevie, as he has made the transition into living as a woman. He has been with his wife for 25 years.

As an intersex individual, Crecelius aspires to become a spokesperson for those born intersex as well as same-sex couples in the future.

52 Inmates Released in Norway Due to Strike

Panic struck in Oslo, Norway last week after guards at a prison went on strike and caused authorities to release 52 inmates.

Among the released inmates from Bjoergvin prison were individuals “convicted for violence, drugs, economic crime and sex crimes”, some of whom are serving long terms. While four prisoners were released on probation, the others were given “a five-day furlough.” The strike broke out on Thursday when public sector workers started protesting wages and working conditions.

At Bjoergvin, prisoners are said to have significantly more freedom than inmates in more traditional correction facilities.  The “open prison” system of Norway maintains that rehabilitation instead of incarceration is the main objective for criminals.

“Men in Black” is Back…And Back in Time

With films like “Dark Shadows” and “Battleship” disappointing at the box office the time seems to be right for the one time king of summer to return.  The question is if “Men in Black 3” is really the right vehicle for Will Smith’s return.  After not staring in a movie since 2008s “Seven Pounds” the audience is sure ready for Smith to be back in theaters.

Over the holiday weekend, the third installment in Sony’s franchise looks to take down the literal juggernaut of Marvel’s “The Avengers.”  Grossing over a billion dollars worldwide in less than a month the film can spare some of the audience.

“MIB 3” stars Smith and Josh Brolin, as a younger Agent K, the character Tommy Lee Jones played originally.  With a story concerning time travel to the 1960s, the “Men in Black” back to the future premise may not be prime storyline to attract a new audience for a film series that’s been dormant for ten years.

Also opening this weekend are auteur Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom” and the found-footage horror film “Chernobyl Diaries.”

No amount of speculation can tell where the chips will fall.  But one thing can be sure to be true: if the movie stinks, nobody’s going to want to see it.

Confession in Etan Patz Cold Case

New York City Police have, after more than three decades, pinned the iconic disappearance of Etan Patz on New Jersey resident Pedro Hernandez.  Although little physical evidence exists, Hernandez has confessed to luring Etan off his bus stop and strangling the six-year-old in a shop basement on May 25, 1979.

Hernandez is currently being hospitalized because of claims of suicide after entering the hospital for a previous illness.  The arrest of Hernandez, however, is only the start of what may prove to be a complicated court case of one of the most publicized missing-child cases in history.  After countless false leads and suspects, the conclusion of Hernandez’s guilt appears surprising and surreal, especially to the Patz family.

The image of bright-eyed, constant-smiling Etan plastered across milk cartons and news broadcasts will never be forgotten.  The way the case of this missing boy became landmark and caught the nation in frenzy is undeniable.  But at least, in some way, the Patz family, who never moved from their New York City apartment, and never changed their phone number in hopes that someday their boy would come calling, can find some closure.
