Spain defeated Italy in the European Cup Championship finals, earning their third straight major title win.
On July 1, Italy and Spain played in the final game to become the Euro Champion. Spain defeated Italy, with a 4-0 win. Spain’s win ended up being their third straight major soccer title. They had previously won the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 Euro Cup.
Also with their win, came new records set by players. Team captain, goalkeeper Iker Casillas, played in his 100th victory in international soccer, while striker Fernando Torres became the first man to score in two European Championship finals.
The other goals from Spain at Olympic Stadium came from David Silva, Jordi Alba, and Juan Mata.
Spain’s win at Euro 2008 ended a 44-year drought of major titles.
The Euro Cup was hosted by Ukraine and Poland from June 8 until July 1, 2012.
