An avalanche, that was accidentally caused by a climber, has killed nine European climbers.
On July 12, in the French Alps, a climber was attempting to scale Mont Blanc, when they accidentally caused a slab of ice to snap off. This caused an avalanche, which ended up killing nine and injuring eleven. Four other climbers are currently unaccounted for.
Many climbers managed to turn away from the slide, just as the sheet of snow and ice thundered down the slope.
Emergency crews using dogs and helicopters helped look around the area for those missing. Their quest was eventually called off right before nightfall.
Amongst the dead, there were three Britons, three Germans, two Spaniards, and a Swiss.
Manuel Valls, the French Interior Minister, has stated that the climbers appeared to be an experienced group, and that the snow was what made the search difficult.
The circumstances of the climbers deaths will be examined by the French investigators.
