The director of The Matrix has come out as transgender.

Lana Wachowski, formally known as Larry Wachowski, revealed she has transitioned while promoting her new film, Cloud Atlas.

Wachowski has been transitioning for years now, but her first public appearance was during an introduction before a trailer for Cloud Atlas.

In the trailer, her hair is styled in pink dreadlocks and she introduces the film with her brother, Andy Wachowski, and director Tom Tykwer.

Wachowski personal life has recently become a source of headline fodder.

In 2002, she went through a bitter divorce from wife Thea Bloom and in 2003, a date Wachowski had taken to the Cannes Film Festival told the tabloids that the director was a “cross-dresser.”

Wachowski is now the first major Hollywood director to publicly come out as transgender.
