Dan Roundfield, NBA veteran with three consecutive All-Star seasons, drowned off the Caribbean island of Aruba while aiding his wife while she struggled in rough water.

According to police spokesman John Larmonie, Roundfield had been swimming with his wife, Bernie, off the southeastern tip of Aruba on Monday when they became caught in rough water beyond a protected reef area.

Roundfeild was apparently swept away by strong currents as he tried to help his struggling wife, Larmonie said. His body was found under underwater rocks 90 minutes later by rescue teams.

Bernie Roundfield was helped to shore by a U.S. tourist snorkeling nearby.

“It’s a real tragedy,” Larmonie said. “He drowned saving his wife.”

In an interview, Bernie said that she and her husband had come to the island with their two grandchildren. The couple had visited Aruba nearly 20 times and were caught off gaurd by the strong currents off the coast of the swimming area known as “Baby Beach”, even though they had frequented there in the past, she said.

“We always go to Baby Beach, and we go there because it is safe,” she said in an interview. “It happened so fast.”

Larmoine said Baby Beach is generally safe but can be deceptive.

“It was a really bad day to go outside the reef,” he said.

A 6-foot-8 forward-center out of Detroit, Roundfeild played for Central Michigan in college and started his pro career with Indiana. He played 11 professional seasons.

Friends and colleges mourned an athlete known for his physical play, but gentle nature.

“Danny represented the Hawks with dignity and pride both on and off the court, and this is a tragic loss for us all,” team general manager Danny Ferry said in a statement.

“People knew he was a great husband, a great dad, a great grandfather,” Bernie Roundfield said. “They knew he would help his friends or any other person who needed help.”

Roundfield was 59.

Human remains believed to be those of missing student Mickey Shunick were found Tuesday near a cemetery in Evangeline Parish, LA.

Shunick, 22, was a local student at the University of Lousiana, last seen 2 am on May 19 as she was riding her bike home from a friend’s house in downtown Lafayette. Shunick has been missing ever since.

“We believe these remains are Mickey Shunick’s, but we are not 100%,” Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said.

Brandon Scott Lavergne, 33, was arrested and charged on July 5 for first degree murder and supposed kidnapping of Shunick.

On Tuesday morning, Lafayette police received information from a reliable source about the possible whereabouts of Shunick’s remains, a spokesman for the Lafayette Police Department said.

The tip lead police to a private, unpaved road in Evangeline Parish where the body was found in an overgrown area behind a old cemetery. The location was 100 yards from the highway.

Investigators from Lafayette Police, the Lafayette Coroner’s Office, and Lousiana State University forensics scientists worked until after sundown Tuesday to recover the remains and other evidence.

“The remains do appear to be those of Mickey Shunick,” Craft said Tuesday night. “Her family has been notified. We have a lot more processing to do and some scientific identification to do, but we believe those remains are that of Mickey.”

Police refused to release the identity of the tip giver, or give any indication that it was Lavergne.

Man Arrested for Bringing Weapons to ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Showing

A man in northeast Ohio was arrested for bringing in a gun, ammunition, and several knives to a showing of The Dark Knight Rises.

Scott A. Smith, 37, said he had no intention of causing harm or inducing panic when he brought the weapons to a showing of the film on Aug. 4.  According to his attorney, Matthew Bruce, he was only trying to protect himself in case someone tried to replicate the deadly Colorado shooting.

Smith brought the weapons with him to the Regal Cinemas theater in Westlake, which is just outside of Cleveland.  He sat by himself in the middle of the theater’s back row around a half hour before the movie started.

An off-duty police officer working security and a theater manager stopped Smith after they both had become suspicious of the bag he was carrying.

Smith is currently jailed and was arrested without incident.  He has been cooperative with officials and is expected to be charged for carrying weapons.

Shannon Eastin Becomes First Female NFL Referee

Shannon Eastin will be the first ever female NFL referee.

Eastin, who has officiated football games for 16 years, will ref when the Green Bay Packers play the San Diego Chargers in a preseason game on August 9.

Her arrival, which comes after the politically charged lockout of the NFL’s referees, is a big deal for the male-dominated sport, which often ignores it’s passionate female fanbase.  The NFL, as well as all professional sports in general, have been very slow to integrate women into more hands-on roles.

In television coverage, women are often regulated to sideline reporting rather than booth commentary.  They’re often left with puff pieces, mainly about stadiums or lifestyle stories, rather than on the competition.

When Linda Bogdan, daughter of Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson, died in 2009, she had been the only female scout in the NFL.  The MLB fares better, with Kim Ng, who is the senior vice president of international operations.  She is the highest-ranking woman ever in the sport, and if she were to become a team’s general manager, she would be baseball’s first.

Although Eastin is the first referee in the NFL, women have previously referred in other sports.  In 1997, Violet Palmer, who still works today, and Dee Kanter, referred regular-season games for the NBA, and in 1972, Bernice Gera was the first woman to call a professional baseball game.

If Eastin does well, expect to see more women becoming referees for the NFL.

A Florida woman has been arrested for leaving her children at home so that she could go have sex with a neighbor.

Crystal Rusaw, 24, of New Port Richey has three children, aged 4 years, 3 years, and 10 months, and left her children alone for multiple hours on August 5.

During the time that Rusaw left her children alone, one of the kids soiled himself and tried to cross a busy four-lane highway alone at 5 a.m.  The 4-year-old carried the 10-month-old as they dodged traffic.

A passerby noticed the children and called the cops.

Rusaw was arrested on charges of child neglect and has admitted to her crimes.  The neighbor she was visiting has not been identitifed.

Rihanna Dropped as Nivea Spokesperson

Pop star Rihanna has been dropped by Nivea as a spokesperson for the German body-care brand.

The Daily Mail has reported that Stefan Heidenreich, the new CEO of Nivea’s parent company Biersdorf, believes Rihanna’s party-girl image does not work well with the brand’s family-friendly one.

Nivea is now trying to clarify that her departure is tied to the end of her one-year contract, and that she wasn’t fired.

In spring 2011, Nivea announced their partnership with the pop sensation.  She appeared in commercials and print ads for the skincare line, and her song “California King Bed” was used for the brand’s “100 Years Skincare for Life” campaign.  The company also sponsored her 2011 Loud tour.

Rihanna’s response to the situation involved her tweeting a headshot of Heidenreich with the caption, “No caption necessary.”
