Human remains believed to be those of missing student Mickey Shunick were found Tuesday near a cemetery in Evangeline Parish, LA.

Shunick, 22, was a local student at the University of Lousiana, last seen 2 am on May 19 as she was riding her bike home from a friend’s house in downtown Lafayette. Shunick has been missing ever since.

“We believe these remains are Mickey Shunick’s, but we are not 100%,” Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said.

Brandon Scott Lavergne, 33, was arrested and charged on July 5 for first degree murder and supposed kidnapping of Shunick.

On Tuesday morning, Lafayette police received information from a reliable source about the possible whereabouts of Shunick’s remains, a spokesman for the Lafayette Police Department said.

The tip lead police to a private, unpaved road in Evangeline Parish where the body was found in an overgrown area behind a old cemetery. The location was 100 yards from the highway.

Investigators from Lafayette Police, the Lafayette Coroner’s Office, and Lousiana State University forensics scientists worked until after sundown Tuesday to recover the remains and other evidence.

“The remains do appear to be those of Mickey Shunick,” Craft said Tuesday night. “Her family has been notified. We have a lot more processing to do and some scientific identification to do, but we believe those remains are that of Mickey.”

Police refused to release the identity of the tip giver, or give any indication that it was Lavergne.
