Eva restaurant on Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles has instituted an offer of 5 percent off your bill if you hand your cell phone at the door.

The offer is part of the restaurant’s attempt to coerce diners into leaving technology aside for the meal, which creates a more pleasant atmosphere.

Owner/Chef Mark Gold stated, “For us, it’s really about people disrupting other guests. Eva is home, and we want to create that environment of home, and we want people to connect again.”

He wants people to care about each other and enjoy the food and service.

Waiters propose the offer when they introduce themselves.

Gold claims that around half of his customers take up the offer, and many express thanks at the opportunity to escape from their devices for a while.

India Sees 56 Percent Drop in HIV Cases

The Indian government released on Monday that the country has witnessed a significant decrease in HIV related cases in the last decade.

“HIV infections have declined by 56 percent during the last decade from 2.7 lakh in 2009 to 1.2 lakh in 2009 in our country,” Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said.

Referring to an international HIV vaccine symposium, Azad said that new evidence from the latest round of HIV Sentinel Surveillance shows further decline in HIV Prevalence among general population, including high risk groups.

“This has been possible due to political support at the highest levels to the various interventions under National AIDS Control Programme, including from Parliamentarians and elected leaders at the State and Local Levels and cooperation received from NGOs, civil society etc,” he said.

Minister of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Ashwani Kumar also emphasized the development of technologies to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease.

“We believe that the new HIV infections could be significantly reduced if effective prevention programs are expanded and reach those at greatest risk of HIV infection,” he said.

Former president APJ Abdul Kalam suggested developing vaccine for prevention of the disease on a national mode, but that it may take some time to enact.

Kumar said that though number of new HIV infections continues to decline at current rates, there will still be more than 22 million new infections by 2015.

But for the present, the recent decline HIV patients is a small victory that continues to lend officials and India hope.

Penn State Unlikely to Lose Accreditation, Despite New Warning

Although Penn State has received another stern warning, the university is unlikely to lose its accreditation as a result of the child sex-abuse scandal.

The warning from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education that told Penn State that their accreditation may be in jeopardy is supposedly just “standard protocol” for an accreditation agency.

Penn State is unlikely to lose their accreditation thanks to their academic quality, meeting standards regarding financial health, adequate board governance, and institutional integrity.

What causes question though over Penn State’s accreditation is due to the Clery Act.  Universities must comply with federal law, and the Clery Act states that universities must provide accurate and timely reports of crime on their campuses.  The U.S. Department of Education is currently trying to determine whether Penn State violated this act.

These investigations on Penn State are due to the fact that top Penn State administrators had failed to report allegations of child sex-abuse against Jerry Sandusky.  Sandusky had been convicted of dozens of counts of abusing boys in June.

Republican Representative Believes Planned Parenthood is “Murder For Hire”

One Republican representative believes that Planned Parenthood is doing nothing more than “getting wealthy on murder for hire.”

State Rep. Larry Pittman (R) from North Carolina recently responded very negatively to an email he received from Planned Parenthood which asked all state legislators not to cut funding to the organization.

Pittman responded to the email, which he sent to every member of the NC House of Representatives Health and Human Services Appropriations commmittee in May.

In his email he stated that, “[Planned Parenthood] is a murderous organization…getting wealthy on murder for hire.  It deals out nothing but deception, death, personal devastation, and moral degradation.  Never will I agree to give that bloddy indecent, immoral organization one penny.”

Planned Parenthood clinics in North Carolina are currently facing budget cuts that will basically serve to defund the organization.  In July, the Republican-controlled legislature passed a budget that defunded the organization and its affiliates.
