A new study has revealed that you can’t ‘catch up’ on your sleep.
According to sleep specialist Dr. Gregory Carter, who works at University of Texas Southwestern, what we think of as ‘catching up’ on sleep, is really just us messing with our circadian cycle. Our circadian cycle is the body’s internal clock which dictates sleep patterns.
Sleeping in later than normal or taking afternoon naps actually make things worse on Monday morning. Any disruptions longer than an hour will knock your cycle out of sync.
The only way to circumvent the circadian cycle is to go to bed earlier. The idea is to wake up around the same time everyday, but go to bed earlier to feel more refreshed.
