Malala Yousafzai, the 14-year-old Pakistani girl who was shot in the head on Oct. 9, has been flown to the U.K. for medical treatment.
The teen remains in serious condition after she was attacked by Taliban gunmen. Yousafzai was shot, according to the Taliban, because she was “promoting secularism” by advocating education for girls.
“Malala will require prolonged care to fully recover from the physical and psychological effects of trauma that she has received,” according to a statement issued by the Pakistani military.
Yousafzai was taken on an air ambulance, which was provided by the United Arab Emirates, from the military hospital in Rawalpindi to the major trauma center at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. Once her condition improves, the teen is to undergo procedures to repair or replace damaged bones in her skull and to receive neurological treatment.
