A California surfer has been killed by a shark.

The victim, 40, has not been immediately identified.  The surfer, however, was mauled and then killed by a shark off the Santa Barbara coast on Oct. 23.

As the victim was surfing near Surf Beach in Lompoc, Calif., the shark headed towards him around 11 a.m.  A fellow surfer pulled the man out of the water and called 911.

When paramedics arrived on the scene they started CPR and then ceased.  The victim was then declared dead.

Shark experts will soon try to determine what kind of shark killed the victim.
