Colorado and Washington voters passed ballot initiatives on Nov. 6 to legalize marijuana for recreational use.
While this is viewed as the biggest victory ever for the legalization movement, it’s just the beginning of a battle. Marijuana is still illegal under laws of the federal government, which overrules state’s rights.
“The voters have spoken and we have to respect their will. This is a complicated process, but we intend to follow through. That said, federal laws still says marijuana is an illegal drug, so don’t break out the Cheetos or goldfish too quickly,” said Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper.
The Drug Enforcement Administration has reiterated its stance that marijuana is an illegal drug, and that possessing, using or selling it is still a crime.
The voter approval of legal weed in both Colorado and Washington will most likely lead to a Supreme Court battle with the federal government.
