2 Arrested At Ole Miss Election Protest

The re-election of President Obama caused quite a stir as a crowd of over 400 protestors gathered on the campus of the University of Mississippi.

According to university statements, a group of 30 to 40 individuals gathered at the student union and within 20 minutes more participants showed involvement from the spread of word through social media. The crowd chanted racial slurs amongst other slogans and rumors of a riot also began to spread.

Unfortunately, this is not the first incident of its kind to take place on the renowned Mississippi campus. Just a few days before this incident was the 50th anniversary of a similarly disturbing riot that followed the forced integration of Ole Miss with the enrollment of its first black student, James Meredith.

Police were alerted to the scene by people who saw Twitter posts about the event. The students were asked to disperse, but approximately 100 people returned. One individual was charged with public intoxication and another with failure to comply with police orders. There were no reports of injuries or property damage.

As election night came to a close, Wisconsin Democratic Representative, Tammy Baldwin, 50, defeated former Governor Tommy Thompson to make history by becoming the first openly gay U.S. Senator.

In one of the most expensive senate races in Wisconsin, raising over $65 million, Baldwin’s victory was another that helped democrats retain the majority in the Senate seats. Being first introduced into Congress in 1998, she is also the first female Senator from Wisconsin to receive such a triumph.

Assuming the seat of Herb Kohl, who is retiring after the completion of his fourth term, Baldwin never let her sexual orientation become an issue during her campaign.

The self-proclaimed “progressive” advocated many issues such as making promises to support investments in infrastructure, education and research to create jobs.
