Final 4 of The Voice decided after shocking eliminations

The Voice stunned America when two fan favorites were sent home on Tuesday. Both Melanie Martinez and Amanda Brown have been sent packing.

Melanie Martinez, known for her gothic style and her subtle emphasis on Hello Kitty, had the best performance of since being on the show the week before. Singing what was dubbed as “her strongest vocal yet, a smoky, jazzy rendition of Fiona Apple’s ‘Criminal’” with fellow contestant Nicholas David, it seemed strange that she would go home.

Regardless of Martinez’s singles getting sold on iTunes faster than most of the other competitors, America did not give her enough votes to move on the next round.

As for Amanda Brown, the shock may not still have set in for all viewers. People were stunned she went home, but trying to figure out who could have gone home before her was somewhat of a difficult task. It seemed that fans wished they could have kept Brown just one more week, because if she had stayed she could have made it to the top.

The Final 4 on The Voice are Terry McDermott, Trevin Hunte, Cassadee Pope, and Nicholas David. Next week, the semi-finals begin on Monday at 8 p.m. on NBC.

John McAfee, the American anti-virus software creator, has been arrested.

McAfee, who has been on the run from police since his neighbor was found murdered in Belize in November, was detained Dec. 5 at a hotel in Guatemala City.  He has been accused of entering the country illegally.

Just hours before his arrest, McAfee, 67, had told the Associated Press that he was requesting asylum in Guatemala over being persecuted in Belize over the shooting and death of neighbor Gregory Faull.

Belize police consider McAfee a person of interest in the case, which left Faull, an American, dead.

New Jersey students sick after trying new anti-energy drink

William R. Satz Middle School in Holmdel, N.J., started school on Nov. 30 just like any other day. Students arrived and classes began as schedule. Before anyone knew it, it was time for lunch. What happened next was best described by a student: “It was like a zombiefest.”

The New Jersey middle school was offering a new anti-energy drink in the cafeteria called Marley’s Mellow Mood, named after the deceased iconic reggae artist Bob Marley. This anti-energy drink has been branded to “reduce stress and relieve tension, while calming the soul and easing the mind.”

After the lunch period was over, students started exhibiting zombie-like symptoms that included vomiting, lethargic behavior and drowsiness.

This is not the first anti-energy drink to hit the market. Back in 2009, “Drank” took the energy drink world by storm, claiming to calm the drinker down instead of giving them a burst of energy.

However, there were concerns with some of the natural ingredients, one of which is included in Marley’s Mellow Mood.

“Valerian roots and rose hips are not really reviewed by the FDA,” said David DiPersio, a clinical pharmacist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, to TIME Magazine. “You can’t be certain of the safety and efficacy of the drink.”

While the ingredients in Drank are different than those associated with the New Jersey “zombie” outbreak, valerian root is part of the main ingredients.

According to Marley’s website, valerian root is supposed to promote relaxation without drowsiness. The label, however, tells a different story.

Underneath the nutrition facts, it reads, “The all-natural botanical ingredients in this product have been specially blended to mellow your mood, and may cause drowsiness … Do not mix with alcohol. Not intended for children …”

Since the incident, the drink has been removed from William R. Satz Middle School and a spokesperson from the Chartwells School Dining Services released a statement formally apologizing.

“We were informed that Marley’s was a new product that did not go through the approval process required for all new products,” the spokesperson said. “We sincerely regret that this product was sold and that students had an adverse reaction to it.”

The on-site manager is currently being investigated and is no longer in their position, according to My Fox New York.

Richest Black Woman in the World

Oprah Winfrey has lost her long-held title as the richest black woman in the world to a Nigerian oil tycoon, according to a report by an African business magazine.Edging out Oprah is Folorunsho Alakija, a 61-year-old woman from Nigeria who is reportedly worth at least $3.2 billion, or roughly $500 million more than Oprah’s $2.7 billion net worth, Ventures Africa reported.
Born into a wealthy Nigerian family, Alakija started out as a secretary in the mid 1970s at the now defunct International Merchant Bank of Nigeria.
Several years later, she quit her job and moved to London, where she studied fashion design. She later returned to Nigeria and launched her fashion line, Supreme Stitches, which caters to upscale, high-society women.

Alakija is the founder and owner of Famfa Oil, which owns a 60 per cent interest in OML 127, an offshore oil field that produces roughly 200,000 barrels of oil per day and is worth an estimated $6.44 billion.

Also a fashion designer and philanthropist, Alakija is married and has four grown sons, as well as one grandchild. She owns at least $100 million in real estate and $46 million private jet, Ventures Africa reported.
