John Kerry was confirmed as the 68th secretary of state by his colleagues in the U.S. Senate on Jan. 29.

The vote was 94-3, with only Republican Senators John Cornyn, Ted Cruz and James Inhofe voted no.  Kerry had voted present on his nomination.

Earlier in the day he had received the nod of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the panel approved his nomination unanimously.

President Barack Obama nominated Kerry in December and he will succeed outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as the country’s top diplomat.

Kerry is the longtime senator from Massachusetts and was the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee.  He has served in the U.S. Senate since 1984.
