Meteor Blast Injures At Least 1,000 in Russia

A meteor, that streaked through the skies above Russia’s Urals region on the morning of Feb. 15, exploded and left about 1,000 people hurt.

The number of injured has continued to rise through the day as more reports come in.

As of late afternoon local time, the Interior Ministry said that about 1,000 people had been injured, including more than 200 children.

Most of those hurt live in the Chelyabinsk region, and the vast majority of the injuries are not serious.

About 3,000 buildings have also sustained damage, mostly broken glass, as a result of the shock waves caused by the blast.

Those affected by the meteor includes hospitals, kindergartens, and schools.  About 20,000 emergency response workers have been mobilized.

The explosion occurred about 9:20 a.m. local time.
