Serena Williams has lost in the fourth round of the Australian Open.
Williams, 30, is ranked No 12 and was defeated by No 56 Ekaterina Makarova, 23, which was her first lost in the Australian Open since 2008. The tennis superstar won back to back in 2009 and 2010, but was unable to compete in last year’s matches due to her recovering from two foot surgeries.
Williams lost 6-2 and 6-3 in the matches.
She previously had defeated Greta Arn, 32, on Saturday, Jan. 21. It was her 17th straight win at the Australia Open. The two matches were 6-1, 6-1, and were over in 59 minutes.
Williams won her third-round victory after Arn double-faulted twice towards the end of the match. After losing, Arn told Serena that it was an honor playing against her, in which the tennis superstar replied “Oh, you are so sweet.”
