Antioxidants could worsen late-stage cancer

James D. Watson, who is a famous Nobel Laureate, has recently published new research in Open Biology that suggest that antioxidants could actually be more harmful than helpful to patients with certain advanced cancers.  The information suggests that patients with certain late-stage metastatic cancers may not benefit from taking antioxidants because some hard-to-treat cancers actually have a way to produce antioxidants that neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS is the “killer” employed by most if not all anti-cancer therapies to kill cancer cells alongside healthy cells. ROS can be naturally generated or induced by cancer treatments and it can be beneficial and harmful to patients. When induced by radiation, ROS can cause damage to proteins, DNA and RNA leading to carcinogens or cancer development. On the other hand, ROS that stemmed from chemotherapy and radiotherapy leads to apoptosis, which leads to the death of cancer cells. The role of antioxidants in cancer development is still widely unknown but this research sheds new light. Healthy individuals can continue using antioxidants to prevent ROS from damaging proteins, RNA and DNA that would potentially lead to cancers.

Missing girl with leukemia found in Mexico, situation still raising concerns

Since late last Wednesday, Phoenix, Az., police have been searching for 11 year old Emily Bracamontes and her mother, Norma, who went missing from Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Today, NBC News reported that Emily and her mother are currently in Mexico, and Emily is receiving the treatment she needs.

Emily was being treated at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital for over a month, receiving chemotherapy to help with her leukemia. While in the hospital, the young girl also contracted a bad infection, which resulted in the amputation of her right arm.

Phoenix area police began a search that following morning after receiving word that Emily and her mother had left the hospital. They left the day before Emily was supposed to be discharged.

Today, Emily’s father, Luis Bracamontes, told NBC News, “She’s well, she’s fine. She is in very good hands now.” Unfortunately, he declined to reveal any other important information.

This newly discovered information, however, has not eased the mind of Sgt. Steve Martos in Phoenix.

“There is a criminal element to this from the standpoint that we don’t know the motive or the reason why the mom removed Emily from the hospital,” said Sgt. Steve Martos to NBC News. “We’ve been told by doctors that the minute the little girl gets an infection, certainly just a matter of days, could result in her death.”

When Police began their search, there was talk of Norma possibly facing criminal negligence if they could not find Emily. Martos did not deny that there would be criminal charges, but their highest priority is finding Emily and keeping her safe.

Phoenix Children’s Hopsital is also deeply concerned for Emily and released a statement that said: “Phoenix Children’s Hospital is deeply concerned about Emily’s safety and well-being. If Emily’s family has questions about her care, we encourage open communication and discussions of options with the care team.  Clinical decisions are not based on ability to pay.”

Both Norma and Luis have stated they have no intentions of bringing Emily back to Phoenix, but ensure that she is both happy and healthy receiving treatment in Mexico.

Cancer is now the number one killer of U.S. Hispanics.

In a report released by the American Cancer Society on Sept. 24, cancer was shown to have surpassed heart disease to become the leading cause of death among Hispanics in the United States.

It is estimated that 112,800 U.S. Hispanics will be diagnosed with cancer, while 33,200 will die of the disease in 2012.

Among non-Hispanic whites and African-Americans, heart disease is still the leading cause of death.

2 Million Cases of Cancer Caused by Infection

The Lancet Oncology review found that one in six cases of cancer worldwide are caused by infections. 27 different types of cancers in 184 countries were studied.

Researchers also found that four main types of infections, including human papillomavirus (HPV), account for nearly 1.9 million cases of cancer each year. Developing countries have three times the number of cases than well developed countries.

Nearly one third of the infected were under the age of 50. Women were more likely to have cervical cancer from infection, while men mostly suffered from liver and gastric cancers.

Most of these infections can be prevented with vaccines, such as the Gardasil vaccine for HPV prevention in women. To read more about the study, click here.

Processed Meat Linked to Pancreatic Cancer

A new study by the British Journal of Cancer has learned that eating processed meats, like bacon or sausage, may increase one’s risk of developing pancreatic cancer.

The study brought together 11 other studies and involved 6,643 people with pancreatic cancer.  The data revealed that there was an elevated risk of the cancer when the patient ate processed meats.

According to the study, a persons risk of pancreatic cancer increased by 19 percent for every 50 grams of processed meat they added to their diet.  50 grams can be roughly a few slices of ham or salami, one hot dog, or two strips of bacon.

The reason that this type of food can induce pancreatic cancer is because of preservatives found in some processed meat products.  The preservatives are nitrates and possibly N-nitroso compounds-potent carcinogens.

Medical specialists are advising people to lower their daily intake of processed meats.

Argentine President Misdiagnosed with Cancer

Argentine President Christina Fernandez was misdiagnosed with cancer last month, said her spokesman on Jan. 7.

The government had announced Fernandez had thyroid cancer around Christmastime.  The reelected leader had an operation to remover her thyroid gland shortly after the announcement.  After analysis, doctors discovered that her thyroid had never contained cancerous cells.

Fernandez’s original diagnosis said that she had papillary carcinoma.  The average rate of “false positives” for the cancer is around 2 percent.

Many Fernandez supporters had actually camped out near the hospital where she was treated and a cheer was heard when the latest announcement was made.

Fernandez, who recently won re-election in October with 54 percent of the vote, is very popular amongst Argentines due to her generous welfare spending.  She is still wearing black as a way to mourn her late husband and closest adviser former President Nestor Kirchner, who passed away in 2010.

Are We Winning the War Against Cancer?

Although cancer is now the top killer of Canadians, people who are diagnosed are living longer than usual.

Curing cancer is often what most people hope for when asked about what medical breakthrough they would like to see, but are we winning the war on cancer?

The “war on cancer” began in 1971, when U.S. President Richard Nixon declared it in one of his annual state of the union speeches.  But, measuring progress on the war really depends on who you ask and how they measure success.

Currently, there has been progress against some childhood cancers, but otherwise, there has been little change in mortality rates.

Clifton Leaf, who is the author of a Fortune magazine article entitled “Why We’re Losing the War on Cancer,” is actually one the people who benefited from the success against certain children cancers.  Leaf, who had Hodgkin’s disease in the 1970s, focuses on actual death rates in his article.  These rates actually haven’t changed much in decades in the following cancers: lung, pancreatic, and liver.

Leaf likes to point out that “there will not be one cancer magic bullet,” which is because there are over 200 forms of cancer.

One way to win the war against cancer would be prevention.  If people would increase physical activity, avoid drinking alcohol excessively, tackle obesity, and quit smoking, cancer rates could half.  But since this isn’t currently enforced 177,800 new cases of cancer is expected to be diagnosed yearly in Canada.

Woman Arrested for Faking Cancer to Get Money

Martha Nicholas, a woman from Hanover County, Va., is under arrest after being accused of faking having cancer in order to obtain money.

Nicholas claimed to be a four-time cancer patient and is being charged with two counts of obtaining money under false pretenses.

She had been the focus of recent community cancer fundraisers, including one for the American Cancer Society.  Police say she was also given money by people fue to her condition.

In April, the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office received an anonymous complaint that stated that Nicholas was falsely claiming she had cancer.  After Nicolas refused to speak with police, they began to evaluate the public announcements regarding her illness.  Their investigation revealed that there was no proof of any cancer treatment at any medical facility.

Nicolas was arrested on Dec. 7 and is due in court this week.
