Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has been tapped to host the 85th Academy Awards.

The award ceremony will be held on Sunday, Feb. 24, on ABC.  This will be the first time that MacFarlane, 38, who is also the co-creator of American Dad! and The Cleveland Show, will host an award ceremony.

But, this isn’t the first time the voice actor has performed life.  In September, MacFarlane hosted the premiere episode for Saturday Night Live’s 38th season, and he’s entertained sold-out audiences at both London’s Royal Albert Hall and New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Oscar Nominations Announced

On Jan. 24, Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence and AMPAS president Tom Sherak announced the 2011 films and thespians who were nominated for a coveted Academy Award.

This year marked the change in rules again for the Best Picture category.  Previously, 10 films were required to be chosen as a Best Picture candidate.  However, the rules have changed to allow anywhere from 5 to 10 films to be nominated.  This year, there were 9 nominations, which are: The Artist, The Descendants, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life, and War Horse.

Demian Bicher (A Better Life), George Clooney (The Descendants), Jean Dujardin (The Artist), Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), and Brad Pitt (Moneyball) are all up for the Best Actor award.  Up for the Best Actress award are Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs), Viola Davis (The Help), Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), and Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn).

Two of the most surprising nominations include a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Melissa McCarthey’s role in Bridesmaids and Jonah Hill’s Best Supporting Actor nomination for Moneyball.

Some surprising snubs that many are protesting against include no Best Actor nominations for Michael Fassbender in Shame or Leonardo DiCaprio for J. Edgar, no Best Director nomination for Steven Spielberg for War Horse, the fact that Drive wasn’t nominated for any awards, including acting nominations for Ryan Gosling and Albert Brooks, and that neither Charlize Theron (Young Adult) nor Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) received nominations in the Best Actress category.  Many are also shocked that there are only 2 songs nominated in the Music (Original Song) category and that Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close was nominated for Best Picture.  The movie currently has the lowest critic and audience approval rating, at 46 percent on Metacritic, of any previously nominated Oscar film.

The 84th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on February 26, 2012.  The awards will be hosted by Billy Crystal, who has hosted the ceremony 8 times before.

Oprah Winfrey Oscar Rumors Debunked

Winfrey has been involved in the Academy Award several times in the past, but will not be involved in the 2012 ceremony, sources say.

Although Oprah Winfrey has hardly been away from television for more than two months, rumors have been swirling that the television personality will be back on the screen sooner than viewers think.

The return of Oprah buzz began when it was speculated that Winfrey was in talks to be the host of the 2012 Academy Awards.

“The camera loves Oprah. Oprah’s a genius.  But it’s not true,” Academy president Tom Sherak said.

It is logical to see how the rumors began, with Winfrey acting as a presenter at the Academy Awards several times in the past and even earning a best supporting actress award for her exceptional performance in The Color Purple.

However, it looks as though Winfrey’s hiatus from the entertainment industry is for the long haul.

After the airing of her farewell show on May 25, 2011, Winfrey has been devoting her focus to her magazine, “O,” the Oxygen television network, and various philanthropic projects.

So, when will Winfrey return as the queen of television?  Only time will tell.
